The start of the New Year was marked at Awhi Rotorua – Healthy Families NZ by the appointment of a new Manager, Leanne Morehu (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāi Tai).
The Healthy Families NZ initiative is focussed on encouraging Rotorua whānau to live healthy, active lives, by eating well, being physically active, being auahi kore/smokefree and consuming alcohol safely and in moderation.
Leanne brings to the role considerable community, health sector and business management expertise, including significant credibility as a leader in both her work and her community life. She has most recently managed the Te Ao Marama Whanau Ora Collective, comprising nine health and social service providers in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
Leanne will be working with the Joint Venture, Awhi Rotorua’s 20 partner organisations, and the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Families NZ team, to develop the initiative in the Rotorua District. Among her first priorities will be the recruitment of the other members of the Awhi Rotorua team, with the aim of building on the good things that are already happening in Rotorua by growing the Healthy Families initiative in schools, workplaces, marae and communities.
Leanne is particularly passionate about community and seeing young people grow and achieve their full potential. She has strong links to the Rotorua community, and she and her husband Warwick (Te Arawa), are delighted to be settling back in the Rotorua area with their 17 year old daughter, Erina.
Leanne has been deeply involved in kapa haka for many years and has recently been appointed a judge for the March 2015 Te Matatini national competition to be held in Christchurch.
