Sound of smokefree future

Healthy Families Rotorua is leading a smoking and vaping cessation kaupapa, using the koauau (traditional Māori wind instrument) as a central tool.

The koauau-based smoking and vaping cessation prototype combines mātauranga Māori, pūrakau, maramataka, and tikanga-based practices to create a holistic approach to improving respiratory health. Integrating hands-on learning with taonga pūoro, this innovative model supports individuals to quit smoking and vaping.

Healthy Families Rotorua systems innovator Teteira Ormsby highlights the importance of community collaboration in bringing the prototype to life.

“By weaving traditional Māori practices with modern health tools, we create a supportive environment that empowers participants to take control of their health,” says Teteira.

“The koauau, with its deep spiritual and healing significance, offers a meaningful and effective alternative for those looking to quit,” he says.

Key partners are Te Arawa Whānau Ora, Manaaki Ora, and Tangata Ora – Ranolf Medical Centre, who have come together to build awareness, offer support and explore collaborative co-design. These engagements involve sharing the kaupapa, explaining the role of taonga pūoro in cessation, and integrating Māori health frameworks like pūrakau and maramataka.

The project team has also discussed how partners can contribute to the initiative by providing health testing, recruiting participants, and assisting with evaluation. A co-design approach will refine the model, ensuring it meets participants’ needs and can be adapted for broader community use.

“Next steps include formalising partnerships, implementing the prototype, and gathering participant insights. A co-design hui will follow to discuss findings and potential developments for scaling the initiative if successful,” says Teteira.

The team will continue to engage with expert koauau knowledge holders to deepen their understanding of using taonga pūoro in healing practices.
