Registrations open for Ruru Parirau hui taumata

There is a need to change the narrative around Māori and alcohol.

That is the focus of Ruru Parirau, Rewriting our Alcohol Story, a hui taumata hosted by Healthy Families Rotorua, with registrations now open.

This kaupapa creates space for kōrero that reflects identity, whānau wellbeing, and the everyday ways of being Māori that support oranga.

Healthy Families Rotorua systems innovator Teteira Ormsby says the hui reflects a shift in how people want to engage with this kaupapa.

“Rather than focusing only on harm, it recognises that we’ve lived well without alcohol before, and that way of being still exists within us.

“People don’t want to keep hearing what’s wrong. They want to focus on what keeps our whānau strong.”

The hui will bring together community, iwi, and those working across the health and social sectors for a day of kōrero, lived experience, and practical discussion.

The programme includes guest speakers and panel discussions, alongside opportunities to connect and reflect with others working across the community, iwi, and the health sector.

It will explore identity beyond struggle, kotahitanga in action, and how everyday acts of being Māori support hauora and whānau wellbeing.

The hui is open to whānau, community members, iwi and hapū representatives, and those working across health, education, and social services.

Registrations are $75 per person and include the full-day programme and catering. The full programme will be available soon.
